NWP v PDA Charity Soccer Match 2015
By Ian Kimmich, NWP

At 3 p.m. on October 4, 2015, Northwest Permanente Medical Group (NWP) and Permanente Dental Associates (PDA) went head to head on the pitch at Lincoln High School in SW Portland. The sun was shining, the day was warm, and the atmosphere was friendly yet competitive. Both sides fielded more than 20 players for the match. Each team was required to have at least 3 women on the field at all times, and there was a lot of subbing in and out—none of us had the conditioning to play a full match at top speed (or really any more than 7 consecutive minutes).
On the NWP side, this effort was captained by pediatricians Dr. Cindy McPhee and Dr. Carsten Seemann. They sent an e-mail invitation to all NWP staff, created a roster of interested staff/players, organized numerous practices before the match, procured jerseys, and found a referee and linesmen. Our captains also negotiated with NWP and PDA to secure sponsorship for the match as well as $1000 each to go to the charity chosen by the winning team.
Through a voting process, the NWP squad chose Community Transitional School and Outside In as the beneficiaries should NWP win. The PDA team chose Dental Foundation of Oregon.
The NWP team, in black jerseys and multi-colored socks, controlled the majority of possession and took more shots, but it was PDA, in their neatly lettered blue jerseys, that managed to find the back of the net. PDA went on to win the game, also winning their charity the sum of $2000. All in all, it was a win for Oregon kids. Later, while many of the players rehashed the match at nearby Goose Hollow Inn, a rematch was put on the books for October 2016.
In the meantime, there will be outdoor practices open to all. A friendly match in Spring 2016 is being planned as well. Anyone interested in attending practices (which are fun and great exercise!!), e-mail: mark.a.brown@kp.org.
